Pilgrimage to The Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation

Carey, OH

Sunday, October 1, 2017

Pilgrimage 2017 – The parish pilgrimage to the Basilica and National Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation in Carey, Ohio was a spiritually enriching day for the 23 pilgrims who participated.  First on the agenda was the Pilgrimage Mass held in the upper Basilica and concelebrated by Fr. Ajay.  After a quick (and delicious) lunch in the Shrine Cafeteria, Brother Randy led us on a guided history and tour of the upper and lower Basilicas.  The Shrine Altar dedicated to Our Lady of Consolation is located in the upper Basilica surrounded by hundreds of vigil lights quietly burning with prayer petitions to Our Lady.  The lower Basilica includes the Chapel of Holy Relics where first class relics of hundreds of saints are displayed and offered for veneration together with other chapel altars honoring many familiar saints including St. Theresa, St. Anne, Padre Pio, Mother Teresa, St. Anthony, St. Jude, St. Joseph, St. Peregrine, St. Catherine, Our Lady of Guadalupe and the Purgatory (Poor Souls) altar.  Also in the lower Basilica are several glass cases containing crutches, canes and other instruments that were left at the Shrine as a testimony of healings granted through the intercession of Our Lady.  Next we attended Devotions which included an outdoor procession where the statue of Our Lady of Consolation was carried during recitation of the rosary, and individual pilgrims were offered a special blessing with a relic of the True Cross.  Before departing, Fr. Raphael gave us a farewell blessing and blessed items that had been purchased in the gift shop.  Our final stop was a drive‑through tour of the grottos depicting each of the Stations of the Cross located in nearby Shrine Park.  As one of the pilgrims said, "This is a day I will always remember."  Photos from the parish pilgrimage will be on display on the digital photo frame in the back of church.  If you were unable to join us and would like to make a personal pilgrimage, details about the Shrine can be found at
